There's New Hope for Prostate Cancer Patients Using Non-Invasive HIFU
As the most common non-skin cancer in the United States, prostate cancer affects millions of men in America. This year alone, the American Cancer Society estimates that 220,800 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed.
The good news is that advances in technology and screening are helping physicians diagnose prostate cancer earlier, giving men more treatment options. One of those options that has gained a lot of attention for men is HIFU, or High Intensity Focused Ultrasound.
HIFU is a non-invasive option for prostate cancer that heats and destroys targeted tissue with ultrasound energy. Studies and physician experiences show that it has less risk of collateral damage than surgery or radiation. This means that the risk for side effects such as impotence and incontinence are lower with HIFU and men can return to their normal lifestyle within a few days of their HIFU treatment.
Simply said, men are interested in HIFU because it preserves their quality of life. There is no hospital stay, no blood loss, no incision and no long recovery. With early stage prostate cancer, HIFU is just as effective as surgery or radiation, but men don’t have to have surgery or be exposed to harmful radiation.
The medical device that delivers HIFU, called Sonablate, was approved by the FDA for prostate tissue ablation in October 2015. Since its inception, approximately 15,000 patients have been treated using Sonablate HIFU worldwide over more than a decade. Read more about HIFU.
